Stoves, multi fuel stoves and wood burners are not only an environmentally friendly way to heat your home they are also typically cheaper to run than oil or gas heating systems.
The benefits of wood fuel heating
Cheaper than oil or gas:
Burning wood for fuel is around 30% cheaper than using fossil fuels.
A low carbon option:
The carbon dioxide emitted when wood fuel is burned is the same amount that was absorbed during the years the plant was growing. The process is sustainable as long as new plants continue to grow in place of those used for fuel. As long as the wood is sourced locally the carbon emissions caused by the cultivation, manufacture and transportation of the wood are much lower than the emissions from fossil fuels.
Is a wood burning heating system suitable for my home?
Can you comply with safety and building regulations?
If you live in an old or unusual home this may be an issue.
See Part L of the Building Regulations for more information.
Do you live in a smokeless zone?
If you do then wood can only be burnt in certain exempted appliances.

Do you need planning permission?
If your flue will extend 1m or more above the height of your roof, or your home is in a Conservation Area or World Heritage Site and you plan to install a flue on the principal elevation visible from a road you will need to speak to your local authority.
